How do jack-o-lantern templates work?

I know this is a stupid question, but with the templates for jack-o-lanterns, do you just kind of look at it and copy or do you tape it to the pumpkin or what? I’ve never done it that way before and just don’t want to mess up on my first try. Any tips would be great!

Where are the easiest pumpkin carving templates online?

I did a google search for pumpkin carving templates I can just print off, but they all look very difficult. I have never carved a pumpkin in my life (my family didn’t really celebrate holidays), and I just want to find a very easy template to print off. I don’t want to do the typical pumpkin face but something a little jazzed up is fine. Any ideas?
